BLOG #3
First shot of the love scene in Breaking Dawn starts with a
wide shot of Bella walking into the bedroom. There is a matched action shot of
her continuing to walk into the room and now the camera is in front, facing her
rather than behind, following her. The next shot is a rule of thirds as Edward
stands behind her, but she is the focus. Then follows a brief jump cut but it
is slightly masked by slowing the clip down and repeating the same action (I
assume because they are vampires they intentionally play with the speed). The
180 rule is then used to give a different angle and sets up the angles for the
next shot. The camera man plays with these two angles within the next 5
seconds. Next follows a montage of clips (being that they can’t show sex, it is
implied with the following shots). They jump to a shot a matched action shot of
Edward ripping her shirt. We see the beginning of the action from the side and
then it jumps to a close up which allows for the 180 rule to be broken because
now we are behind them facing the bed rather than next to the bed. The montage
allows for rules to be broken because the following shots are a mixture of
extreme close ups, medium shots, close ups of different body parts and
different actions. The shots are a mixture of our point of view and the two
characters points of view. The shots are very continuous and are based on a
mixture of content and movement.
