Soundwalk

My soundwalk happened on my walk to the Q train on the Upper East Side as well as boarding the train At 9PM.  In new york city, the space between cars passing by is a great indication of what time of day because traffic gets really bad. Lack of noise in NYC is a good time indicator. The sounds that were unique and meaningful to me were the whistles and wisps of air that I never noticed before when listening to someone talk. Reminds me of negative and positive space to make up an image. Is it the space between the letters that creates the word? I never noticed how appealing and reliant on noise that I was to make me feel comfortable. Things as simple as the air conditioner background noise brings comfort to me, it lets me know that things are going to be okay. And the piercing sound of the dragging of feet, the sound shoes make crushing against concrete reminds me of my mother reprimanding me for doing so. Notes of noises I heard:

Sound of cars passing over the sewer 

Bicycle passing by 

Cars driving at different speeds 

The wind hitting the banner of a store 

Women heels 

Men dragging his feet every few steps 

The squeaking of the escalator 

Thumping as people step on the escalator stair 

The breaking and thumping of the train as it pulls into the station 

Noise it makes as it stops and noise it makes as it pulls off changing and oscillating through different pitches 

Foot brushing against the concrete 

Side conversations 

The wind as it whips my ear 

Cha cha chafing noise the train makes against the rails 

High pitched screeching of the train

Walk do not run announcement 

Train arriving announcement 

The sound of the air conditioner on the train 

Ruffling of magazine paper but not magazine and little bit tougher material

Plastic bag moving in a rhythm as the person walks down the platform 

The sound of the bubble coat as the person shifts in their seat 

Variety of languages in the background 

Man clearing his throat 

A woman snapping carrots in her mouth 

The sound of her chewing 

The air between the letters and words of people 

Faint sound of hip hop beat and lyrics on passenger headphones.
